The vampire coven known as the The Volturi reside in Volterra, Italy. They are regarded by all other vampires as the vampire "royalty" of the supernatural world. They are as regarded as such because the 5 of the family have lived for well over 3,000 years. Also, because they enforce the only law that the vampires must abide by; which is to make sure that humans never learn of the existence of vampires. There coven is the largest in existence because The Volturi's gaurd is so large. The Volturi's gaurd is entirely comprised of vampires with special gifts and they have a total of 32 vampires in their gaurd. The Volturi will often send some of their gsurd, mainly Jane, Alec, Demetri and Felix because their gifts are best designed to control others. Heidi will usually bring back humans to The Volturi's lair because of her beauty. She does this because The Volturi are fiercely protective of their city and hunting is not allowed inside the city.
The 5 vampires that make up the make up the family are Aro who can read every thought a person has ever had once he makes physical contact, Marcus who senses relationships, Caius who has no power(the 3 brothers), Aro's wife Sulpicia, Caius' wife Athendora, and formerly Marcus' wife Didyme who had the power to make others happy, act as leaders of the coven. Though in the books it seems that Aro acts as the main leader among the 5. Among the Volturi's gaurd there is Jane, who creates illusions of pain, her twin brother Alec, who is able to cut off all feeling in a person, Demetri, who can track anyone once he catches the tenor of their mind, Chelsea, who can change emotional bondings and Renata, who can make anyone feel distracted and start wandering when they near her. There is also the human secretary Gianna, who is killed by the Volturi in Breaking Dawn.
